An African wooden Qur’anic prayer tablet
The Centre of one side with ink inscriptions within a chip carved border, repeated to the Centre of the other side to applied paper within a simulated and painted border, two-tone brown leather bound arched handle.
Timbuktu and Housa is a city in Mali, situated in the Niger River famously said to have known about it’s mud-brick’s historic(Djinguereber Mosque and prestigious Sankore University)The study of Arabic (the language of the Qur’an) is an integral part of Islamic religious training. Students use wooden writing boards to practice their calligraphy and to help them memorise Qur’anic verses. Itinerant mystics (Sufis) also use boards to write specific verses in response to supplicants’ problems or requests. These verses may relate to the healing of diseases or solutions to particular types of problems.
